Upgrade Your Jeep JL Audio with Terra Acoustics
I love a good piece of music. So does my wife. She finds a song she likes and she’ll sing it for days on end, until the song is virtually ruined for both of us. Sometimes I need a sound system that can out sing my wife :-)
Jeeps are not known for their acoustics or audio. Even the upgraded Alpine sound system available in a Jeep Wrangler leaves something to be desired. Yet music is such a key component to all of our adventures. We have a “Jeep Cruise” playlist that has been the soundtrack to hundreds of off-road miles. So it’s a shame knowing that the quality of that audio experience has always been a bit…. lacking.
Enter Terra Acoustics. Unlike many sound system upgrades that will set you back a pretty penny and require a good amount of labor to install, the kits from Terra Acoustics are advertised as 10 minute installs with all the tools required included. They also offer a 60 day trial, and are produced by self-proclaimed audiophiles who love good music. An easy to install, inexpensive, high-quality audio upgrade….Seems too good to be true, right?
I installed our kit for the Jeep Wrangler JL this weekend and I need to start by expressing my frustration with the install time. Terra Acoustics advertised it as a 10 minute install, but that’s pure bullcrap. It only takes 6 minutes.
Installation
The kit comes nicely packaged in a box with foam inserts; raise the inserts to reveal the toolbag hidden below. Inside the box there is a card with a scannable QR code for installation instructions and a Spotify playlist you can use hear the new speakers in action. On the Terra Acoustics Instagram there are also directions for how to optimize your audio experience, including a hard-wired connection from the audio source to speakers and recommended settings for equalizer, etc.
True to their word, all of the tools needed for install (and then some!) are included in the kit. My favorite of these tools being the trim removal tool… you can never have too many of those.
Installation is very straightforward. Remove the stock speaker grill cover using the trim tool. Unscrew the two screws holding the factory stock speaker in place. Unclip the speaker from the factory wiring. Attach wiring harness for Terra Acoustics tweeter / grill to midrange driver. Connect midrange driver to factory wiring. Insert midrange driver back into the dash. Attach using the two factory screws. Clip Terra Acoustics grill cover into place. Repeat for the other side.
That’s it.
Verdict
I’ve done a lot of mods to the Jeep, and this is arguably amongst the easiest to date.
I am extremely pleased with the look and finish of this kit. Installed, you’d have a hard time knowing this wasn’t a stock sound system because it matches the lines and aesthetics of the factory speaker grills. I had seen many pictures of the product online, but was really impressed by the quality of it in my hand. This didn’t feel like cheap plastic. It feels like a top-notch quality product.
So how does it perform? This is, after all, the real question. It doesn’t matter how nice the speakers feel in my hand if my ears can’t tell there was an improvement. After finishing the install, I opened the Spotify playlist and clicked play on the song “Save Your Tears” by the Weeknd. I could immediately tell the difference.
My music is more full and vibrant. I don’t really know how else to describe it. There was a richness and depth to it that I am accustomed to hearing in my Dolby Atmos home theater — not my car! I expect that after a few hours of listening, the speakers will break in more and the quality will continue to improve.
Recommendation
If you enjoy a quality music experience as you trek down the trail, then I’d highly recommend the Terra Acoustics upgraded speaker system. It is available in both a Jeep jL / JT and Jeep JK kit. At this point I don’t have any critiques of the product, and I’m incredibly happy with the upgrade.
