Quick Shot: Train Depot
If you follow my blog, then you know by now that I love to photograph trains, planes, and automobiles (in addition to my usual landscapes and wildlife). So when I was in Atlanta and I found this old dilapidated train depot, I couldn't resist shooting it.....
We pulled off the road and I quickly scouted the angle I wanted to capture - unfortunately it was the side where the live tracks were located. VERY CAREFULLY I moved across the tracks to a safe place to setup my shot. Two clicks later, I was done and got back in the car.
I cannot stress the importance of being careful when around live train tracks - not only can you be killed by an oncoming train, but the railroad company has every right to call the police for trespassing. Whenever possible, I try to ask an employee of the station if they mind if I photograph the trains from a safe location - I've found that most railroad employees and workers are happy to let you photograph so long as you are careful. In fact, when I was in Alaska, the railroad operators were so excited by someone wanting to photograph their train that they gave me some recommendations of where to go to get another great setup with the train coming through the tunnel! Be smart, be polite, and ask permission; you'll be surprised what people will offer you!
This was a relatively easy photograph - I knew exactly what I wanted when I saw it and I knew how I was going to crop and edit the image. All told, I probably spent less than 5 minutes actually taking this photograph from start to finish - which is alot less than most of my images!
