Getting Organized With Goose Gear
Anyone who has ever gone car camping learns how much gear is needed to make a trip survivable. And if you want to go from survivable to enjoyable…well that takes more gear. Overlanders, who often traverse rough terrain with additional gear considerations quickly understands every nook and cranny that can be used to pack rat equipment.
Now spend one night. All the gear you packed in your driveway is now thrown around the back seats and trunk of your car like it was subject to a tornado. You’d be lucky to pull out two matching shoes, much less find that roll of toilet paper that you were sure you left right there…
Organization. Plastic boxes, fabric boxes, fancy drawers, DIY setups — every overlander has their system. But few organizational systems are as clean, precise, and awesome as the storage units made by Goose Gear.
Goose Gear is an American company that builds each drawer system to order, and they only sell through a trusted network of retailers. If you want a system, prepare to wait several weeks or months — but the wait is well worth it. The machining and craftsmanship is well worth the wait.
For my Jeep JL overland rig, I got a traditional camp kitchen setup. It starts with a plate system. The plate replaces the factory fabric floor of the trunk and comes with options for an accessory door on either the left or right side of the plate. I opted to put my hatch on the drivers side, so that it is still accessible by pulling the fridge slide all the way forward.
The plates also come with precisely aligned mounting holes so that you can attach the various Goose Gear drawer modules. And for those who are willing to give up part or all of their back seat, you can get plate systems that run all the way forward and replace the back seats, giving you maximum storage opportunities .
On top of the plate, I added a fridge module and a drawer module. The fridge module, which mounts on the drivers side, has a small drawer on top of the fridge and a heavy duty locking slide to pull the fridge in/out of the Jeep. The days of dragging a heavy ice-filled cooler are gone!
The passenger side has a drawer module with two solid wood drawers. Each drawer is on heavy duty slides that pull all the way out, allowing maximum access into the drawer.
Installation of the Goose Gear system is really very easy, and there are lots of online videos walking you through the process, so I won’t re-hash what has already been covered. But it can be done with basic hand tools and a few hours of work. Nothing wild!
With the drawers installed, we’ve replaced several boxes worth of overland gear and my wife keeps commenting how much she enjoys the tidiness. The days of digging through piles of crap to find the lighter are gone - each piece of gear has a home.
